What Is a Fun Sci-Fi Book Series That's Safe for Kids and Teens to Read?

If you're searching for a fun science fiction book series that's safe for kids and teens, you probably want two things that don't always seem to go together:

A book that's appropriate for younger readers, and a story that's actually exciting.

You don't want to hand your child a book and discover halfway through that it's filled with profanity, explicit sexual content, or unnecessarily graphic violence.

But you also don't want "clean" to mean boring. (I get it, I look for these exact same types of books to read myself).

Kids and teens still want battles. They want mysteries. They want superpowers, dangerous enemies, impossible choices, big reveals, and those "Wait...WHAT?!" moments that make them immediately start the next chapter.

That's exactly why I wrote the I Am Sleepless series.

What Is the I Am Sleepless Series?

I Am Sleepless is a clean science-fiction adventure series by me, author Johan Twiss, written for readers from roughly 4th grade and up, with a story that's deep enough for teens and adults to enjoy too.

The adventure begins with book one in I Am Sleepless: Sim 299.

On the distant planet Ethos, children known as Primes develop extraordinary abilities and are trained to defend their world against a mysterious enemy called the Splicers.

Among them is twelve-year-old Aidan.

Aidan is different.

He doesn't sleep.

While everyone else rests, Aidan trains inside incredibly realistic combat simulations. He's spent countless sleepless nights advancing farther than any other cadet.

Eventually, he reaches a simulation no one else has ever reached:

Sim 299.

And what he discovers there changes everything.

Is I Am Sleepless Appropriate for Kids?

This is one of the most important questions parents ask when they're looking for books.

Yes. I Am Sleepless was intentionally written as clean science fiction that kids, teens, and adults can enjoy.

There is:

• No traditional swearing
• No sex
• No drug content
• No graphic violence

There are battles, fights, danger, injuries, villains, and characters facing life-or-death situations. This is an adventure series, after all.

But those scenes aren't written with graphic descriptions.

The first book's published clean-content description specifically notes that it contains action and fight scenes but no sex, drugs, graphic violence, or conventional profanity.

Instead of real-world swear words, characters might shout things that belong to the world of Ethos—like "Batmonkeys!"

Which, quite frankly, is much more fun anyway.

Clean Doesn't Mean the Story Has No Depth

This is probably the biggest misconception about clean fiction.

A book doesn't have to be filled with mature content to tell a mature story.

As the I Am Sleepless series progresses, the world becomes much larger than Aidan could have imagined.

There are secrets.

Rebellions.

Questions about who can be trusted.

Characters with complicated histories.

Friendships that are tested.

Mysteries surrounding the war and the alien Splicers.

And twists that completely change what readers thought they understood.

Younger readers can enjoy the superpowers, creatures, battles, humor, and adventure.

Older teens and adults can dig into the larger mysteries, relationships, moral questions, worldbuilding, and long-running story arcs.

That's one of my favorite things about writing the series.

A fourth grader and a parent can read the same book and enjoy it for completely different reasons.

Superpowers...With a Catch

One of the things that makes the world of I Am Sleepless different from typical superhero stories is that extraordinary abilities come with consequences.

The Primes of Ethos possess different powers and abilities—but those abilities can also come with defects.

That creates characters who aren't simply invincible superheroes.

Their strengths can also be weaknesses.

Aidan is even more unusual because he possesses abilities that don't fit the normal rules.

And, of course, there's the whole never sleeping thing.

Why is he different?

Why is someone—or something—guiding him toward Sim 299?

Those questions become part of a much larger mystery.

There Are Also Some Seriously Weird Animals

If your kids like strange hybrid creatures, Ethos has plenty of them.

The planet is filled with hybrid animals with names that tell you exactly what you're getting.

Imagine creatures like a:

Kangadog.

Hippophant.

Spidergoose.

Mouseroach.

Some are cute.

Some are weird.

And some you definitely wouldn't want crawling around your bedroom at night.

The creatures add humor and imagination to a story that can become surprisingly serious as Aidan begins uncovering the truth about his world.

What Do Reviewers Say About I Am Sleepless?

One of the most encouraging things about I Am Sleepless has been seeing how many different types of readers have enjoyed it.

Readers' Favorite praised the worldbuilding and called the battle simulations exhilarating, while reviewers have described the series as fast-paced, imaginative, suspenseful, and appropriate for young science-fiction fans.

Other reviews have specifically addressed the question parents care about.

One reviewer gave Sim 299 a 100% family-friendliness rating, with zero ratings for language and sexual content.

Another parent-focused review called the book "very clean," while still noting that there are intense action scenes.

That's exactly the balance I wanted.

A safe book doesn't have to be a boring book.

Is I Am Sleepless Only for Kids?

Definitely not.

That's another reason I describe the series as being for 4th grade through adults rather than putting a strict upper age limit on it.

The main characters may be young, but the larger story isn't written only for children.

Adults who enjoy clean science fiction can follow the same mysteries and twists alongside younger readers.

That also makes the series a good option for families who enjoy reading the same books and talking about them together.

Parents don't have to suffer through a painfully simplistic children's story.

And kids don't have to read a book filled with adult content just to get an interesting plot.

Everybody gets the adventure.
